Graduate Level: Iowa State University:

I attended Iowa State from 1970-71, 1975-78, and 1979-1983. I was a graduate student in Mathematics (1970-71). I did not choose to get a degree, however. During this time I worked as a teaching assistant, teaching Precalculus Mathematics, and Calculus.

I was a Master's student in Computer Science from December, 1975 to May, 1978. I received a Master's degree in 1978. My Master's paper was titled "Algorithms in a Programming Language Parser" During this time I was a Research Assistant. Duties included programming. I was also a student member of the System Group, and wrote a program in IBM 370 assembly language to test the quality of tapes. This required channel command programming, which requires programming at the supervisory level.

I also wrote a grouping program for a Ph.D. student in Civil Engineering.

From September, 1979, to August, 1983, I was a Ph.D. graduate student in Computer Science. I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science in December, 1983. My dissertation was titled "Hypertrees---A study in language specification." (Although this has the word "hypertrees" in the title, it had nothing to do with database, the word was first used for that purpose about six months after I graduated.)

During this time I was a Teaching Assistant. I Graded papers, and taught courses in beginning programming. I also taught a course in Data Structures. I graded papers for a graduate level Data Structures course, and was a consultant on a seminar which covered the area of my dissertation.

My transcript is available.

Undergraduate Level: Graceland College (Now Graceland University):

I attended Graceland College from September, 1966, to May, 1970. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Mathematics and Chemistry in May, 1970.

During this time I worked at various jobs. My Freshman year I worked grading papers for the Calculus class even though I was taking the class. My Sophmore year I graded calculus papers as well. My Junior year I was a lab assistant in Physics. My Senior year I graded papers for the Computer Science class, and wrote programs for the Accounting office on the NCR 500 computer.

I was also active in many clubs on campus. These included the Ham Radio club (although I do not have a license). I'm still not sure if I actually formally joined or not, but I was very active. During my stay there the club started a carrier current radio station called KGRA, and I had the same relationship to the resulting KGRA club. I was also active in the Mathematics club (where I was vice president one year). I was a member of the Chemistry Club but we didn't do much as I recall. I did a lot of work with the Telescope my Junior year, but I have forgotten whether we formed a club or not.

My transcript is available.

High School: Lamoni High School:

I attended the Lamoni High School from September, 1962, to May, 1966. I was active in the Mathematics club my Junior and Senior year. I was on the wrestling team my Junior and Senior year. I was active ion the school newspaper my Sophmore and Junior year.

During most of my High School experience I made money selling newspapers (Des Moines Register and Tribune, the latter is now defunct). I also delivered papers for a free newspaper which was distributed around the town.

In the spring and summer I mowed lawns. A lot of lawns. In the winter I shovelled sidewalks.

Junior High School: Lamoni Junior High School:

I attended the Lamoni Junior High School from March 13, 1961, to May, 1962. I started in the middle of the semester because my parents moved then due to a job change.

Mystic Junior High School:

I attended the Mystic, Iowa, Junior High School September, 1960, to March 12, 1961. It was fun attending school there because the class size was very small. There were only 7 people at my grade level. This resulting in a lot of individual attention.

My major memories are of playing Abraham Lincoln in the class play. (With only seven people, the opportunity to get a part was quite high.) The Mystic School system had closed the High School a few years before, and one of the teachers took me to the High School library, where I was allowed to do whatever I wanted. I remember reading the book Before Adam.

Grade School: Norwoodville Grade School:

I attended the Norwoodville Grade school for grades 1-6. Norwoodville was an unincorporated suburb of Des Moines, Iowa.

Grade School in Des Moines, Iowa (I forgot which one):

I attended a Grade school in Des Moines, Iowa, for grades 2-1. I did not get along with the teacher very well. I was only there part of a year.

Minneapolis Grade School:

I attended a Grade school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for grades K-1. It was an in-town school, but I have no idea which one. I actually started in the middle of my Kindergarten year, as my parents moved from a rural area of Wisconsen to Minneapolis in the middle of the year, and the rural area did not have a kindergarten.
